The PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run has set a record target of $50 million for the February 19, 2012 event. This is to mark Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence and raise funds for the beneficiary, Chain of Hope Jamaica assisting the Bustamante Hospital for Children. This effort will be supported by three distinguished patrons who have joined forces with PanCaribbean for the 14th staging of the event: Her Excellency The Most Honourable Lady Patricia Allen, Dr. The Honorable R. ‘Danny’ Williams and Dr. The Honorable Usain Bolt.
The patrons were introduced at a media briefing on Wednesday, November 30 at PanCaribbean’s corporate headquarters. Donovan Perkins, President and CEO Pan Caribbean Financial Services, invited all Jamaicans at home and abroad to join hearts in this special initiative. “We thought it would be great to celebrate the PanCaribbean Sigma Corporate Run at 14 years old and Jamaica becoming 50 years old with something very special next year and at the same time do something tremendously good – helping babies. Digicel Jamaica has given support by setting up a text line, so everyone can donate $50 by sending a blank text to 444-2498.We know our 2012 target of $50 million is very ambitious, but with our three wonderful Patrons and your support we know we will achieve our goal.”
Chain of Hope Jamaica is working towards building a sustainable paediatric cardiac programme at the Bustamante Hospital for Children to serve as a center of excellence for the Caribbean. Four international partners have come on board for the construction and training of the US$5 million project, with PanCaribbean committing to equipping the operating theatre, catheter lab and 10 bed Intensive Care Unit which will double the current capacity. Over 400 children are born each year in Jamaica with heart disease, and approximately half are not expected to survive to adulthood without medical or surgical intervention.
The PanCaribbean 5K Sigma Corporate Run will be held on February 19, 2012 under the theme ‘Play your part, Save a heart’. Registration opens on January 2, 2012 for runners, walkers and wheelchair participants. Main sponsors include Catherine’s Peak, Digicel Jamaica, The Gleaner Company, National Baking Company, Puma and RJR Communications Group.
