Sports Icon to receive Sagicor Iconic Award

Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) President, Captain Horace Burrell, veteran coach Glen Mills, and hockey administrator Katherine “Kay” Wilson have been nominated for the Sagicor Iconic Award based on their legendary sports leadership in recent years. The award is to be presented this evening at the annual RJR National Sportsman and Sportswoman Awards at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel (Kingston, Jamaica).

All three have contributed significantly to their respective fields. Burrell, who has led the development of the national football program since his presidency in 2007 is rivalled by Mills, who is today one of the most recognisable coaches in track and field - attributed in part to his coaching success of two of the biggest drawing cards in Athletics, Usain Bolt - and Yohan Blake.  Wilson is also a strong contender as a result of her pioneering stewardship of women’s hockey in Jamaica. Her role as past President of the Jamaica Women’s Hockey Association has progressed women’s hockey in Jamaica from a mere thought to the global competitive appeal it has today.

The financial group is also providing a $200,000 donation to go to the winner’s charity of choice.

Brand Manager of Sagicor Life Jamaica, Barrington Groves believes the contributions are invaluable to sports development in Jamaica. In congratulating the awardees he said “Thank you to each sportsman and sportswoman for making Jamaica proud. The Sagicor Iconic Award recognises an individual who has impacted sports in a significant way and it is an honour to be a partner in recognising outstanding performances.”
