UWI Pelicans Soaring on top in Open Netball League
Kingston, Jamaica; The University of the West Indies Pelican netball teams continue to defy the odds, as the institution has been having a stellar season in the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Sunshine Open League, the biggest netball championship in Jamaica.
UWI, under the guidance of coach Conrad Parks, has so far garnered thirteen points from six games to lie in first place in the elite group.
This enterprising play has seen the team triumph over defending champions JAMALCO 24-21 in a fierce battle for the win. It was JAMALCO's first loss of the new season. The victory over the many-time champion has placed a lot of attention on the UWI Pelicans team which is being led by national Netball Team Captain Nadine Bryan. Their last match against Global United last weekend took UWI 'A' to first place in the elite group with a win of 22-15.
The Pelican's free-flowing, attacking style of netball can also be attributed to the outstanding play of goal attack and National Under 21 player Tristina Harwood. On the defensive end, UWI has held its own with national representative Malysha Kelly.
"The UWI Netball Programme is finally showing its true potential due to the change in the fitness regime at the institution. We have put in a new workout programme which the players have adjusted well to, and the results are forthcoming due to the hard work which the girls have put in", says Coach Parks.
Like the elite group team, the UWI Pelicans 'B' team has also exhibited top performance, leading their group with an unblemished record. The UWI B team has so far gone 6 - 0 in Zone two. This past weekend the team solidified its place in the top ranks by winning both matches against Rivoli United 'A' and Speg 'A' 19 -12 with only two matches to go for the Open League.
Coach Parks emphasized that UWI Mona possesses tremendous talent in netball, and the involvement of the national team members has given the team an added boost moving forward, adding that, "The aim of the team is to make it into the play-offs of both the elite group and the intermediate level".
UWI Pelicans Netball 'B' team plays against Payne Land on Thursday, January 31 at 5:45pm followed by Molynes United 'B' on Saturday, February 2. Also on Saturday UWI 'A' will play their final match for the elite group against Mico 'A' at the Leila Robinson Courts National Stadium.
