UWI/Pelican Invitational Hockey Tournament defending champions Circus Circle Hockey Team and Tropics Hockey Club will no doubt be challenged for their respective titles as male and female victors on Saturday, February 16. Plans are in high gear for the second annual Hockey Invitational to be held at the Mona Hasfaul Turf.
Organizers have implemented measures to ensure that the second staging will feature higher quality in competition.
The first match up begins at 12 noon, a change from last years 9am opening, to accommodate a larger number of supporters at the beginning of the tournament, “We took into consideration our game schedule, and decided to condense the total time of the tournament by running concurrent matches throughout the day. We hope that supporters will come out earlier to cheer on their favorite teams,” says Cherine Richards, Sports Activity Coordinator, UWI Sports Department.
In addition to the later start the Hockey Invitational closes with a bigger bang as well with an after party to fete the players and supporters. Slated to begin after the awards ceremony the party features DJ’s and performances all on the Mona Hockey Turf grounds.
“We welcome Hi-Lyte Sports Mix, Laribo Marketing, Seprod and Wynlee Distribuors on board and have their full support in staging a successful event,” Richards continues.
The inaugural staging of the competition saw some twelve top rank hockey clubs and colleges vying for the championship. The grand prize of $50,000 will go to the best performing male and female teams, the tournament also awards prizes to players for the titles of leading goal scorer, best goalkeeper, best defender and most disciplined team and overall MVP. Match time on Saturday, February 16 is 12 noon at the Mona Hockey Turf on Mona Road.
