GSAT students benefit from Sagicor scholarships
Sixteen students have been awarded five year academic scholarships by Sagicor Life Jamaica. This takes to 244 the total number of beneficiaries since the program began in 1994. The 2013 awardees were feted at the annual GSAT luncheon on Wednesday, August 28 at the Knutsford Court Hotel.
Each year, with the assistance of the Ministry of Education, the insurance company identifies students who have performed exceptionally well in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT). Four boys and 12 girls make up the 16 students on this year’s list of awardees.
These students are each awarded a bursary valued at $125,000.00 each for the duration of their secondary education tenure and receive moral support from Sagicor employees through the company’s mentorship program. Barrington Groves, Brand Manager, Sagicor Life shared “School work can be challenging at times, which makes academic excellence an amazing achievement which should never go unnoticed. Our annual awards ceremony is an avenue used to encourage and reward the efforts of Jamaica's future leaders.”
Speaking at the ceremony on Wednesday, Tameka Hill, Jamaica’s Youth Ambassador, in her keynote address, stressed the importance of an education if they are to secure meaningful employment and noted that class participation, homework and responsibility are the trifecta for success. She counselled students to learn from their failure, avoid distractions and reminded the awardees that Jamaica is depending on their success.
“In doing well, you not only do well for yourselves, you not only make your parents proud, you not only make your teachers happy, you also make a nation great. Jamaica is depending on you to pioneer the next step, to ensure that we have productivity and we are great as a nation,” she said.
Since 2009, the awards ceremony has grown to include the JTA/Sagicor Champion Boy and Girl for their outstanding athletic ability displayed at the JTA/Sagicor National Athletic Championships. This year’s championship was held on May 16 and 17 at the National Stadium.
