CB Group UWI 5K Gets Set to Continue Aid of Student Development

The second staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk is set for Sunday, November 17 and will be looking to continue and improve the help it set out to offer for student development. Following the inaugural staging of the event, 20 students were able to benefit from the $18M generated from the initiative, through scholarships. This year the organizers are hoping to improve upon the initial success and will be targeting income which will then allow additional scholarships for young person’s to pursue tertiary education.

The initiative has stirred the University community into action as several persons have been mobilized in the effort to gain support for the event’s sophomore staging.  Heading the ‘race’ to garner support is Olympian bronze medallist and World Championship silver medallist at 200M Warren Weir who has confirmed his participation by being the 2013 patron of the event. Weir along with co-patron Hon. Douglas Orane, O.J will rally the University and the wider University community of students, graduates, staff and friends to support the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk’s effort to generate funds for student development.

The CB Group UWI 5K is an important undertaking which comes at a time when the nation seeks to identify alternative means of funding education. This second staging will see even more support as persons increasingly recognize its value and potential for growth.

Through the inaugural staging of the event the University of the West Indies was able to provide 15 scholarships to students who demonstrated exceptional sporting ability while maintaining the academic standard which allows matriculation to the University. These student athletes range across the sporting disciplines, from female football to badminton and volleyball, sports considered non-traditional and thought to be previously ignored. On the flip side, the sports initiative also managed, through the tremendous support and success of its first staging, award 5 additional scholarships which were handed to recipients based solely on their academic performances.

To support the second staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk the public is invited to register and directly aid this continued push for increased student development at the nation’s and the region’s premier tertiary institution. Registration can be done through the University of the West Indies Department of Sports or online through Registration is $1000 per person or $900 for persons in a group of 50 or more, while students will pay a discounted rate of $500 with valid ID.

The CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk is set to get underway on Sunday, November 17 and will be looking to rally support of the public through participation or corporate sponsorships. The event’s patrons Hon. Douglas Orane, O.J and Olympic 200M star Warren Weir will lead the charge in collaboration with the 20 inaugural scholarship recipients who are this year’s ambassadors for the race.
