Kingston, Jamaica; Wolmers’ Boys was crowned the inaugural champion of the male U-19 section of 2014 University of The West Indies Hockey Invitational on Saturday February 15.
Wolmers’ triumphed in a closely fought battle over Jamaica College following a thrilling penalty shootout after the teams played out a 0-0 draw. Jamaica College took the ascendancy and led the dreaded penalty shootout 3-2, but failed to capitalize as the Wolmers’ goalkeeper saved the final shot attempt sending the shootout to sudden death. Wolmers’ seized the momentum given to them by their goalkeeper and scored with the deciding shot following a miss from JC.

In the 3rd place game, Kingston College Braves easily defeated Sharpes 2-0 while the Kingston College Strikers got past Browns Town Community College 3-2 to place 5th overall.
The tournament continues with the Club Division today at 2:30 pm EST which will see the battle for of the 2 time defending champions Circus Circle Hockey Team strive for their 3rd win.
In the Club Division, male teams such as Phoenyx Hockey Club, Explorers Hockey Club, UTech Hockey Team, Raiders United, GC Foster, Sharpes Male Hockey Team, Munro College Old Boy Hockey Team, and UWI Hockey Team in the men’s section. The women’s section will see the UWI Hockey Team, UTech Hockey Team, Sharpes Rebel Hockey Club, Tropics Hockey Club competing to dethrone the defending champions, the St. Andrew Strikers.
The UWI Pelican Hockey Invitational is under way today, Saturday February 15, at the Mona Hockey Turf. Gates opened at 9am and admission is free, The Club Division Semi-Finals will start at 6:30pm EST and has been delayed due to inclement weather. Patrons can bring their families to witness quality competition and be a part of the giveaways courtesy of this year’s sponsors Hi-Lyte, Seprod and Red Bull.
