Sagicor empowers students to achieve academic excellence

Sagicor Life Jamaica increased its secondary scholarship disbursement by 16, totalling 260 students and $17,780,000.00 since 1994. This was disclosed at the company’s annual GSAT Awards Ceremony held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Thursday, August 28.

Sagicor, with the assistance of the Ministry of Education, each year identifies students who perform exceptionally well in national primary examinations. This year, Sagicor scholarship recipients have been each awarded a bursary valued at $150,000 each, for a period of five years in high school.

Dr the Honourable R. Danvers Williams O.D., Chairman of Sagicor Life Jamaica says “This award is a direct reflection of the commitment and dedication exhibited by both the students who were mature enough to apply themselves academically, and the teachers and parents who continuously pushed them to strive for excellence. Such a great accomplishment cannot go unnoticed, and deserves the recognition of not only Sagicor, but of the nation itself.”

“Sagicor Life Jamaica is confident that in helping to enrich these children’s educational experiences, they and Jamaica will benefit now and in the future,” says Williams.

Secondary scholarships such as this, offer parents and students motivation to achieve a valuable incentive for the duration of a child’s secondary tenure. Despite the introduction of free education in 1973 for Government operated schools in Jamaica, some parents still have grouses when their children pass for costly privately run high schools after sitting national examinations, such as Common Entrance up to 1998 and the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) thereafter.

The awards ceremony also sees scholarship awards being handed out to the Champion Boy and Girl from the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA)/Sagicor National Athletics Championships, held in May each year. This year Champion Boy Romario Mickiel will attend Manchester High School and Champion Girl Shanique Rowe will attend Edwin Allen High School.
