Arnold Foote Foundation disburses over $1m to CARIMAC scholars


The Honourable Arnold Foote, OJ, CD, JP last Thursday handed over cheques totalling $1,050,000 to three outstanding CARIMAC students enrolled in the Bachelor of the Arts (BA) Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) programme for the 2014-2015 academic year. Odile Blake, Kevoy Jackson and Yohan Lee have each received $350,000 toward tuition, books and miscellaneous charges.

Arnold Foote, who was instrumental in the lobby for local degree and diploma courses in communication arts, at an awards ceremony held the CARIMAC grounds located at the University of the West Indies’ Mona Campus, was emotional. “They were all very impressive. I am really deeply grateful that this has happened because this is something that I have thought about for many years,” said the Patron of the Foundation.

The three students are enrolled in CARIMAC’s Bachelor of the Arts (BA) Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) programme; and have each received scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year valued at $350,000 after meeting rigorous pre-requisites of the inaugural scholarship.

All students of the BA IMC programme moving from first year to second year or second year to third year with a 3.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher are eligible for scholarship entries each year.

J.J. Foote, Chairman of the Foundation explained that the presentations and submissions made by the 2014 applicants of the inaugural scholarship were exemplary. “There were two slots, but the standards were so high that we extended the scholarships to three. It was an impressive process because the applicants apply in a written form and through a video presentation. I was personally blown away and members of the panel were in awe. It is truly a testament to the kind of education that they receive at CARIMAC. Any agency would be lucky to have them.”

Dr Hopeton Dunn, Director of CARIMAC commended the work of the Foundation and made an appeal to the private sector. “We are encouraging and inviting more entities to come on board like the Arnold Foote Foundation and Advertising & Marketing, to offer support to our students through scholarships. This year is our fortieth anniversary and they can support the events we have in our anniversary celebrations, such as our banquet on the 25th of October. Contributions made will go directly to student scholarships.”

The BA IMC is a three year programme that brings convergence of thoughts, processes and techniques in communication. It also responds to the international trend in combining traditional marketing with social marketing imperatives. The main elements in the programme are Public Relations, Social Marketing, Advertising and E-commerce.

Advertising & Marketing Jamaica Limited was founded by the Honourable Arnold Foote, OJ, CD, JP in 1964. Since then, the entity has remained among the top advertising agencies in Jamaica. The Arnold Foote Foundation was formed in 2014 as part of the entity’s 50th anniversary celebrations in honour of its Chairman and Founder. The Foundation is dedicated to contributing to the growth of the advertising profession in Jamaica.
