Sagicor Jamaica donates $4.3M machine to boost Ebola screening

Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited announced the purchase, and donation of a Fever Scan machine to the Ministry of National Security to aid in the detection of Ebola. The announcement was made at a joint press conference with the Minister of National Security at Sagicor’s Head Office.  In attendance was, Minister Bunting, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, Jennifer McDonald – CEO of Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency, Major General Stewart Sanders – Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security and Willard Brown, Executive Vice President - Sagicor Life Jamaica .  The body scanning machine is valued at US$38,000, it uses an infra-red technology to detect individuals with elevated body temperatures. 

Richard Byles, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Sagicor Group Jamaica – the region’s leading life insurance company says “We are concerned for the safety of all Jamaicans. The potential threat of this health hazard is something that requires a collective effort and our purchase and donation of this equipment is part of our contribution to the welfare of the entire Jamaican society”.  Byles continued, “it is vital that we do all that is necessary to protect our citizens and the economic stability of this country.”

The Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting said “the move by Sagicor to purchase this fever scan machine is a clear indication of a private sector entity recognizing its crucial role in support of public safety and security.  Sagicor’s decision to volunteer assistance is yet another example of how citizens and organisations can Unite for Change.  This timely contribution should serve as an inspiration to others to join the Government as we work to protect our borders from new and emerging threats”.  

Ebola, formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a viral illness that is often severe and fatal in humans. According to the World Health Organization, WHO, the initial symptoms include fever, weakness, muscle pain and sore throat, all of which can be overlooked as symptoms of common illnesses.
