Seasoned veteran Rupert Green of Double Marchers put on a masterful display to retain his crown at the 4th Annual CB Group UWI 5K & Smart Eggs Kids K on Sunday, November 15 at the UWI Mona Bowl. Green outdid the scores of participants who participated in the event, winning in a time of 15:33 ahead of Lenford Adams 15:54 and perennial contender Shawn Pitter who posted 16:28 for the final spot on the podium.
The race was keenly contested between the 38 year old Green and his younger counterpart Adams, 27, before the former admittedly used his superior race strategy to open and maintain a gap to the finish.
“It was great competition this morning. He (Adams) kept pushing and pushing and he never gave up. I had to dig deep and utilize the course to my advantage and after passing the 3K marker I took advantage of my strength and used the hill on that part of the course which proved to be the difference. I also must say that the CB Group UWI 5K is a great initiative. I went to college thanks to a scholarship as my mother did not have the means so I know the value of this event. I just hope it can get bigger so more persons can benefit,” said Green.
On the female side it was 15 year old Crystal Brown of Mavis Bank High School who demolished a field of her seniors which included the experienced Arieta Martin. Brown posted an impressive 19:55 to claim top spot, while many time champion Martin was beaten by over a minute with 20:59 and Karlene Blagrove further back with 21:12 for third.
“This is my first win from the start of the season in September and I am very proud of it. I placed second and third at other events, so I am pleased to have my first win. I have been training hard and following instructions of my coach Devon Grant and today it all paid off,” said Brown.
In the 5K walk, it was Andre Smith of the Go Run Running Club who bested the field in a time of 27:52 with Lenworth Hunter in second, 28:19 and Jason Whynn in third with 28:41. Olivia McKoy decimated the female walk field winning in 32:16, a minute and fourteen seconds ahead of Paula Sinclair, 33:30 while Denise Allen posted 25:46 for third.
In what proved to be the most exciting race of the day, Thiery Mills, 2:48 of Hope Valley Primary narrowly defeated Tatianna McFarlane, 2:49 to become the overall winner of the Smart Eggs Kids K. Ajani Banton finished second in the boys’ standings with 2:54 and Kevonnie McFarline 2:58 grabbed third. Following her sister’s herculean effort falling just shy of clinching the top overall spot Davia McFarlane sealed second place in the girls’ standings with a run of 3:01 while third place went to Abonner Wallace. The Smart Eggs Kids K was contested by children 11 years old and under.
Thousands of entrants participated in the 4th staging of the CB Group UWI 5K on Sunday November 15 at the UWI Mona Bowl in aid of the event’s purpose of student development through funding scholarships. Since the inaugural event in 2012 the race has raised over JMD $38 Million and awarded over 75 scholarships. Part proceeds of the 2014 event funded a Thermocycler Machine for the Jamaica Kidney Kids Foundation.
