Lascelles Chin conferred with Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by Northern Caribbean University

The honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, was conferred on the Hon. Lascelles Chin during the NCU 2016 Commencement

The Honourable Lascelles Chin, OJ, CD, LLD (Hon. Causa), Founder and Executive Chairman of the LASCO Affiliated Companies was conferred the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) in acknowledgment of his outstanding accomplishments and the significant impact of his  contributions to nation building by the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) on Sunday, August 14. The Honorary Degree was presented during NCU’s Graduation Ceremony at their Mandeville Campus, during which Chin was lauded as a pioneer in the development of commerce and industry in Jamaica. He was also recognised for his visionary leadership, philanthropic efforts toward sustainable community development throughout the Caribbean and entrepreneurial achievements.

In acceptance of the Honorary Degree, the Hon. Lascelles Chin expressed gratitude to the Northern Caribbean University in their commendation of his achievements and shared in his personal and professional philosophy to inspire the 2016 graduating class.

“I accept this Doctoral award with humility, appreciation and pride, conscious of the responsibility now on me, to uphold the highest ideals of Northern Caribbean University.  I will always endeavour to be worthy of the honour you have bestowed on me.  I was ordinary and with effort became extraordinary; you can be like that too.  At LASCO, we strive to be extraordinary and our philosophy is to always give back.  By giving back to our Teachers, Police, and Nurses, we help them to make Jamaica a better place. We bring heart and mind to what we do at LASCO,” explained Chin.

Lascelles Chin grew up in a humble family in South Central Jamaica and is grateful for his origins. The dynamic business leader shared with the 2016 NCU Graduating Cohort his humble beginnings, while encouraging them to strive for more and contribute how they can to building our nation.

Graduates, some very laudable things have been said about my achievements here today.  However, like many of you, my parents did not have life easy; I had to work very hard to achieve success, and was denied many things in life.  I did not have enough lunch money at times, and had to make my own toys.   It is my fervent hope that you will be inspired by my life experiences, to also strive for success, while contributing to nation building,” expressed Chin.

Today, Lascelles Chin is a titan of business and industry in Jamaica at the helm of the three LASCO Affiliated Companies, in Manufacturing, Distribution and Financial Services. Chin spoke to the 2016 NCU Graduating Cohort, challenging them to overcome whatever they are faced with as no obstacle is too large.

“I challenge you, graduates. Embrace the inescapable changes of life with educated minds and hearts. Go forth with God, find your place in society, make a difference in the world and be extraordinary,” said a smiling Lascelles Chin.

The conferral of the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humane Letters follows honours and awards that Chin has received from the University of Technology who conferred on him a Hon Doctor of Laws; the American Friends of Jamaica Peacock Award for International Achievement; the Roche Quality Awards; the AMCHAM Jamaica Awards of Excellence for Corporate Social Responsibility; and the Medal of Distinction from the International Federation of Consular Associations (FICAC). The Honourable Lascelles Chin has also been inducted into the PSOJ's Hall of Fame and received other recognition and salutations for his entrepreneurial efforts, business acumen and local outreach efforts.
